The Story Behind Jardín Botánico
Founded in 1972
The Jardín Botánico Joaquín Antonio Uribe was established to protect and display thousands of plant species native to Colombia. Named after a pioneering 19th-century Colombian botanist, it spans 13.2 acres and contains native and exotic species from different habitats. It serves as a living museum and scientific research center.
The Orquideorama
The iconic Orquideorama is the garden's centerpiece — a stunning wooden pavilion with a honeycomb-like structure resembling flowers. Its unique architecture provides shelter for plants and events while allowing natural light and ventilation. The structure has become an architectural symbol of Medellín's commitment to blending nature with urban design.
A Living Classroom
The garden serves as an environmental classroom for education, recreation, and civic culture. Thanks to the program "Formación de Públicos" by the Mayor's Office of Medellín, the garden offers free admission to all visitors, making it accessible to everyone in the city.
